When can I switch providers without a penalty?
You can switch providers for free as soon as your fixed-term contract expires. If you don’t have a fixed-term contract but instead have a variable or dynamic contract, you can switch right away. With a fixed-term contract, you can switch without penalty three months before the end date. Use our tool to check if you can switch yet.
How long does it take to switch?
You can set up the switch in just a few minutes, but the entire process takes an average of three weeks: two weeks for the legal cooling-off period plus processing time at the new supplier.
You won’t be without electricity or gas for a single moment. Only the name on your bill will change. Want to start sooner? Choose a start date when you sign up; we’ll automatically check for you whether your old supplier accepts it.
How does the supplier calculate my advance payment?
The monthly advance payment (or installment) is an estimate of the annual energy costs, divided by twelve. Suppliers use historical meter readings from the past three years. For a new home, they use the average consumption of comparable households.
Do you have solar panels or a heat pump? Let them know; this will make the installment amount more realistic, and you won’t have to pay extra when you receive your annual bill. You can adjust the amount at any time for free through your supplier’s website.
Can I switch providers if I have solar panels?
Yes, switching energy providers while having solar panels is easy. And right now, solar panels are a great way to save a lot by switching providers.
When comparing plans, enter the number of panels or the amount of kWh you feed back into the grid. Our comparison tool will then show you suppliers with high feed-in tariffs and low fixed costs. Factors like feed-in costs are factored into the price, so you can make an accurate comparison.
Can I switch to district heating?
With district heating, you can’t switch suppliers for the district heating service—you have a single, fixed supplier for that.
However, you can choose your own electricity supplier (and, if applicable, gas supplier). It’s more cost-effective to use a different supplier for those services than the one that supplies district heating.
When should I submit my meter readings, and how?
If you have a smart meter, your meter readings are automatically recorded, so you don’t need to submit them.
If you don’t have a smart meter, you usually submit your meter readings online within five days of switching providers or receiving your annual bill. You can do this through your energy supplier’s portal.
How do cashbacks and welcome bonuses work?
Suppliers attract new customers with cashbacks or sign-up bonuses of up to €710. You’ll receive this bonus at the end of the contract period; the cashback is automatically applied to your annual statement.
