When choosing a SIM-only plan, there are many factors to consider, such as how much data you think you’ll need. If you want to be sure you’re covered, go for a few extra GBs. On an annual basis, you’ll pay about €6 more for 10 GB instead of 5 GB.

Find the data plan that's right for you
Choose a plan based on your own usage, not what the provider recommends. The ACM reported a Dutch average of 8.7 GB per month. Check your usage for the last three months in your current provider’s app.
Choose a plan slightly higher than that average. Going over your data limit costs a lot of money—about €0.10 per MB.
I’m usually at home
using WhatsApp, online banking, and watching the occasional video. A small data plan is enough. Get 5 GB instead of 2 GB. The difference is often just €1 a month.

What types of SIM-only plans are available?
There are four types of SIM-only plans:
- Unlimited SIM-only
- SIM-only with monthly cancellation
- SIM-only voice-only
- SIM-only data-only
You can also combine these types, such as a voice-only plan that can be canceled monthly.
Unlimited
SIM-only Don’t want to worry about overage charges and use a fair amount of data and/or call minutes each month? Then unlimited SIM-only is the right choice. You can choose from either everything unlimited, or just SIM-only unlimited internet or SIM-only unlimited calling.
SIM-only monthly cancellable
Are you looking for a temporary SIM-only plan, for example for 3 to 4 months? Then SIM-only monthly cancellable is the best choice. This plan has a one-month term and can be canceled each month with a 30-day notice period.
SIM-only voice-only
plan Do you want a plan that allows you to make calls only? Then you can sign up for a SIM-only voice-only plan with Simyo, Ben, or KPN. You will not receive any data.
Which SIM-only providers are available in the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands, there are three providers with their own networks: KPN, Odido, and Vodafone. These three have their own networks with their own cell towers. The other 11 providers use the network of one of these three. They are either subsidiaries or lease capacity.
Coverage is nearly identical to that of the parent network, but the price is often significantly lower.

SIM-only with no activation fees
In the past, almost every provider charged a one-time activation or administrative fee when you signed up for a SIM-only plan. With a “SIM-only with no activation fees” promotion, you could easily save €15 to €30 when switching providers.
These days, providers almost never charge these fees anymore. Many providers still advertise a “no activation fee” promotion, but in practice, that promotion is ongoing. So you don’t need to pay specific attention to that anymore.
The real benefit now lies mainly in temporary discounts on the monthly price, which do change regularly. Think of discounts on the monthly price for the first 6 or 12 months. This often saves you much more than it used to with just free activation fees.
SIM-only with a bundle discount
You can combine your SIM-only plan with other SIM-only plans within your household or with other services you have at home, such as internet and energy. This gives you a bundle discount.
Combining SIM-only plans with other mobile plans
With some providers, you can combine SIM-only plans and phone plans within a household or group for extra savings. This is known as a family plan.

your data limit. Avoid high costs outside your plan by setting a data limit. You usually select this option when signing up, but you can also do it later. Have you used up your data allowance? Then buy an extra data plan—it’s cheaper than continuing to use data outside your plan. - Going for a large plan? Pay attention to the speed
When comparing plans, you can choose from different internet speeds. If you want a large data plan, you probably also want good, fast internet. Make sure you have an internet speed of at least 100 Mbit/s.

What is a SIM-only plan?
A SIM-only plan is a mobile contract that doesn't include a phone. You only pay for data, talk time, and text messages. There are no device costs. This is a great option if your phone still works fine and you want to save money.
How much does a SIM-only plan cost?
Prices start at around €2 per month for a small data plan without call minutes. For unlimited data, you’ll pay about €25 per month. A 1- or 2-year contract is usually €2 to €5 per month cheaper than a plan that can be canceled monthly.
How much storage space do I need?
The Dutch average is 8.7 GB per month (ACM, 2024). If you mainly use Wi-Fi at home, 5 GB is usually enough. Are you often on the go or do you watch a lot of videos? Choose 10 to 20 GB. Do you regularly use a hotspot or watch TV shows on the train? Then an unlimited plan is more convenient.
Can I keep my number?
Yes, number portability is free and required by law. When you place your order, simply enter your current cell phone number and carrier; we’ll cancel your old contract and schedule the switch date. On that day, you’ll activate your new SIM or eSIM, so you’ll never be out of reach and won’t pay for two plans at the same time. If you’re already out of contract, the switch can be completed within a few business days.
Does a SIM-only plan affect my BKR score?
A SIM-only plan is not reported to the Credit Registration Bureau. Only device financing over €250 counts as a loan and is registered. Your mortgage or borrowing capacity therefore remains unaffected as long as you only sign up for a SIM-only plan. Providers sometimes do conduct an internal payment check, but this does not affect your external credit score.
How does a SIM-only plan work abroad (roaming)?
Within the EU, you can use your plan at no extra cost thanks to “Roam Like at Home.” Calls, texts, and most data are included. Outside the EU, high surcharges often apply; turn off roaming or buy a local prepaid SIM card.
What happens if I go over my data limit?
Once you’ve used up your data allowance, you’ll be charged the out-of-allowance rate: typically €0.10 per MB and €0.30 per minute. Most providers send a warning or pause your data when you reach 80% or 100% of your data allowance. Avoid surprises by choosing a slightly larger plan or unlimited data, and keep an eye on your usage in real time through your provider’s app.
What is the difference between 4G and 5G?
In the Netherlands, 4G offers download speeds of up to approximately 350 Mbit/s; 5G can reach speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. This means videos load faster and video calls or games run more smoothly, especially in crowded areas. For lightweight apps, you’ll notice little difference in practice.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card that’s built into your phone. This means you no longer need a physical SIM card. Not all phones support this feature. So when switching providers, check whether you need an eSIM or a physical SIM card. It doesn’t make a difference in terms of cost.
When can I switch?
With most providers, you can sign up as early as 120 days before your current contract ends. Your new plan will then start right where your old one left off. Are you already out of contract? Then we’ll handle the switch within a few business days.
