Inmiddels wordt verder onderhandeld over het vredesakkoord, met een mogelijk vooruitzicht op een definitief vredesakkoord. Ook wordt de krappe gasvoorraad versneld aangevuld deze zomer, dit kan juist weer verdere druk zetten op de gasprijs.

Gas Price Trends Over the Past Year
After months of increases at the start of 2025, the gas price fell steadily throughout 2025, reaching a four-year low by the end of the year. Since March 2026, however, the gas price has skyrocketed due to the war in the Middle East. The biggest price spike is now behind us, and we are seeing gas prices stabilize for the time being.

As a consumer, you pay a higher gas price than the exchange price, because the exchange price excludes energy tax and VAT. The consumer gas price also includes a profit margin for the energy supplier.

What factors determine the price of gas?
How gas prices are calculated
The gas price in your energy contract consists of:
- The base supply rate
- Energy tax
- VAT
You pay VAT on both the base supply rate and the tax. The energy tax for gas is €0.73 per m³ in 2026. This is added to the base supply rate. The tax is always the same per cubic meter of gas. The base supply rate varies by supplier.
Other costs you pay for gas include:
- Fixed supply rates
- Network management costs
Fixed supply fees: These are fixed monthly administrative fees that can vary by supplier.
Network management costs: Network management costs are the fees you pay to transport gas to your home. These costs are mandatory. Although you pay network management costs through your supplier, it doesn’t matter which supplier you choose (the costs are the same).
Is it a good idea to lock in the gas price now?
Yes, this is a good idea if you want certainty about the gas price in the coming period. Currently, gas prices are high due to the war in the Middle East and low gas reserves, but you can still find a fixed-rate contract with a lower gas price available for under €1.40 per m³.

Our advice is therefore to choose a 1-year fixed-rate energy contract if you want price certainty. We do not recommend a 3-year contract at this time, because there is a high chance that you will lock in an excessively high gas price for too long a period.
Why compare gas prices?
To save as much as possible on your energy bill, it’s a good idea to switch energy suppliers regularly. Especially if you have gas at home.
Gas costs make up the largest portion of your energy bill, and as a new customer, you can easily take advantage of high one-time discounts and lower rates for gas (and electricity).
If you stay with the same energy supplier for too long, you’ll pay a variable gas rate, which often ends up costing you more. This is because energy companies purchase energy on the current market for new customers, while they’ve often already purchased gas earlier (at a higher price) for existing customers.
