When should you submit an urgent energy application?

You’ll need to submit an urgent energy application if you need a new energy contract within a few days. This can happen in the following situations:

  • Urgent application when moving: you forgot to sign an energy contract while moving, or your home is being handed over earlier than expected. In this case, you’ve received a letter from your grid operator with a deadline by which you must have an energy contract in place. If you haven’t received this letter yet, you can often sign an energy contract through an energy comparison site.
  • Urgent request at the same address: this may apply if your roommate is moving out and the energy contract is in their name. Or if you have overdue payments and your current energy supplier unilaterally terminates the contract because of this.

  2. Compare the available suppliers in our energy comparison tool and choose the energy contract that best suits your needs
  3. Apply for your energy contract immediately and enter the start date here; you will receive confirmation of your application
  4. After receiving the confirmation, contact your chosen supplier by phone and indicate that this is an urgent request
  5. Your application will be processed for expedited service

Urgent energy service request without a deposit

With most energy suppliers, the urgent application itself is completely free. However, many suppliers may ask for a security deposit in certain cases (but they are not required to do so).

Suppliers do this because they often don’t have time to check your payment history with an urgent application, even though they want to be sure you can pay your energy bills.

The following energy suppliers never require a deposit for urgent applications:

  • Tibber
  • Zonneplan

Note: they only offer dynamic energy contracts (which are not recommended for everyone). You can also only submit an urgent application with them if you are moving.

When might a deposit be required?

Energy suppliers always perform a credit check when you apply for an urgent energy contract. Based on this, they may request a deposit in the following cases:

  • You have overdue payments or debts
  • You have previously had your service disconnected by an energy supplier
  • You are moving to a neighborhood where many people do not pay their bills, or the previous residents at your address had difficulty paying
  • You’re signing a contract at your current address on an urgent basis

The amount of the security deposit you’d have to pay varies significantly by energy supplier. The security deposit amounts for each energy supplier in 2025 are as follows:

Energy supplierDeposit amount
Energiedirect and Essent€175 per product
Budget Energie, Greenchoice€200 per product
Mega Energie, Powerpeers€300 per product
EngieUp to €400 per product
NextEnergy€250
Eneco, Oxxio€400
Vattenfall€450
Vandebron1x your installment amount
Frank Energie2x your installment amount, min. €250
Coolblue Energy, Gewoon Energy,
Innova, Pure Energy, United Consumers
Up to 6x your installment amount

Starting in 2026, the deposit may not exceed one-third of the estimated annual bill.

Once you’ve paid the security deposit, your urgent application will be processed and your energy contract will begin.

Of course, you’ll get your deposit back once you’ve paid your monthly installments on time. The refund is usually applied to your annual bill or at the end of your contract.

What You Need to Know About an Emergency Energy Application

Have you received a letter from your grid operator stating the deadline by which you must have an energy contract in place? Make sure to take care of this as soon as possible. If you fail to do so, your energy service will be disconnected.

Costs for reconnecting electricity and gas

Once your service has been disconnected, you’ll need to have your electricity and/or gas reconnected. This comes with high costs—up to €200 if you need to be reconnected for both. These costs are entirely your responsibility. So it’s important to avoid this!

Disadvantages of an urgent application

Fortunately, submitting an urgent request is fairly simple and quick to arrange. However, it also comes with some drawbacks.

  • You have fewer energy suppliers to choose from, which can sometimes make it more expensive
  • You waive your 14-day cooling-off period
  • You may have to pay energy costs to your grid operator if they temporarily took over your energy contract.

Therefore, always try to avoid an urgent energy application by applying for an energy contract in a timely manner. In many cases, this can be done up to 6 months before a potential move.
