The energy market is constantly changing. Rates change weekly, suppliers adjust their offers and terms, and a high review score doesn’t tell the whole story. Figuring out for yourself which supplier is consistently affordable, customer-friendly, or suitable for solar panels takes a lot of time. That’s why we do it for you: with our annual, independent study.
We use our own price data from the energy comparison tool, analyze thousands of customer reviews, and critically evaluate suppliers based on accessibility, service, and terms and conditions. The top-scoring suppliers receive the Best Choice Award every year.

Just as in 2025 and 2024, Budget Thuis—formerly Budget Energie—was most frequently ranked among the top 3 cheapest fixed-rate energy contracts for average and high consumption. This proves that Budget Thuis is consistently affordable for most households.

For this study, we use our own price data from our energy comparison tool, examine multiple consumption scenarios, analyze customer reviews, and evaluate suppliers based on service, responsiveness, and terms and conditions. In doing so, we look not only at promises but also at the fine print.
Our price calculations include all costs, including discounts, feed-in costs, and feed-in tariffs. When assessing customer satisfaction, we look beyond just a review score: we also evaluate whether a supplier is easy to reach and provides substantive responses to customers.
| Section | How we evaluate this |
|---|---|
| Suppliers | 17 suppliers with a fixed-term contract, active in our comparison tool, and holding their own supply license. |
| Price | We track weekly which providers are in the top 3 cheapest contracts for low, medium, and high consumption. |
| Customer Satisfaction | Rated based on app quality, reviews, responsiveness, quality of responses, and terms and conditions. |
| Solar Panels | Total annual price, including feed-in costs and feed-in tariffs. Suppliers with a negative net feed-in tariff were excluded. |
Dynamic contracts are not included in this study of the best energy supplier offering a fixed-rate contract. We have made a conscious decision to exclude them because a dynamic contract works differently from a fixed-rate contract.
That’s why we’re evaluating dynamic energy suppliers in a separate study, where we look at factors such as price, customer satisfaction, and suitability for households with solar panels.

In our energy comparison tool, we only list suppliers we trust. However, we take a particularly critical look at suppliers whose terms and conditions could be disadvantageous to consumers.
For example:
Are you unsure about a supplier? Don’t just look at the price—also consider the terms and conditions, reviews, and responsiveness.
That depends on your situation. Based on our research, here is our advice:
| Your situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the lowest price | Budget Thuis | Consistently affordable for many households with low to high energy consumption for years. |
| You have solar panels | UnitedConsumers or Budget Thuis | Often a good deal for solar panel owners, despite feed-in costs. |
| You value customer service | UnitedConsumers or Pure Energie | High scores for personalized service, responsiveness, and customer feedback. |
The best energy supplier isn’t the same for everyone. Your choice depends on what matters most to you, such as price, customer service, or sustainability. Your address, energy usage, and solar panels also play a role.
Our research shows which suppliers score the highest. But the best choice for you depends on your living situation, energy usage, contract preferences, and how much you value customer service.
