What is a fixed-rate energy contract?

A fixed-rate energy contract is an agreement in which the rates for electricity and gas are fixed for an agreed-upon period (usually 1 or 3 years). During this term, your rates will not change, even if market prices rise.

In addition to providing certainty, our research (2025) shows that a fixed-rate contract is also always cheaper than a variable-rate contract.

Advantages of a fixed-rate energy contract:

  • Fixed rates, so certainty
  • Generous sign-up bonuses
  • Benefit from a switching discount every year
  • No need to worry about your energy bills

Disadvantages of a fixed-term contract:

  • You don’t immediately benefit from price drops
  • Risk of a penalty if you cancel early

Compare fixed-term contracts

A 1-year or 3-year fixed-rate plan?

According to Melvin Paalvast, an energy expert at Keuze.nl, a 1-year contract is usually the most cost-effective: rates are lower, and 1-year contracts typically come with relatively higher sign-up bonuses.

Are you looking for long-term security? Then a 3-year fixed-rate energy contract is a great option. You won’t have to worry about anything for 3 years.

Is a fixed-term energy contract a good idea?

Yes, a fixed-rate energy contract is a wise choice. A fixed-rate contract gives you price certainty and offers significant savings compared to a variable-rate contract. A 1-year contract is particularly advantageous: you benefit from a new welcome bonus every year.

Solar Panels and Fixed-Rate Contracts

Do you have solar panels? Even then, it’s advantageous to choose a fixed-rate energy contract. This allows you to fully benefit from the net metering program and get the most out of your solar panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when my fixed-term contract ends?

Once your fixed-term contract expires, you will automatically be transferred to an open-ended contract. You can then cancel your service at any time.

Tip: Switch suppliers as soon as your contract expires. That way, you’ll get another welcome bonus and avoid higher rates.

Did you know that Keuze.nl automatically notifies you when you’re eligible to switch again?

Want to cancel your fixed-term energy contract early?

If you cancel your fixed-term energy contract before the agreed-upon date, the supplier may charge a cancellation fee. This fee depends on:

  • The remaining amount of electricity/gas based on your estimated annual consumption
  • The reference rate; the resale value of the energy purchased for you to a new customer
  • The rates at which you originally applied for the contract

The early termination fee varies by situation and will be calculated on a per-contract basis. The supplier determines the amount of this fee based on the loss they incur.

What rates are "fixed" under a fixed-term contract?

  • Supply rates: the price per kWh of electricity and per m³ of gas.
  • Fixed charges: the fixed costs per month, quarter, or year

Please note: suppliers are free to set these rates themselves, under the supervision of the ACM.

Which costs are still subject to change?

  • Energy tax: this is a government levy
  • Grid operator cost: costs for transmission and maintenance

These costs are set at the national level and may change each year.
