How a dynamic energy contract works
With a dynamic energy contract, you purchase your energy directly on the exchange, paying a small fee to the energy supplier.
- Flexible rates based on current market prices
- Variable rates for gas on a daily basis and for electricity on an hourly (or 15-minute) basis
- Opportunity to reduce costs through smart energy consumption

What is a dynamic energy contract?
With a dynamic energy contract, you don’t pay fixed electricity or gas rates, but prices that change hourly for electricity and daily for gas. Dynamic energy suppliers purchase energy a day in advance and pass on the current purchase price, plus a small fee, to you.
Current dynamic purchase prices
The purchase price depends on supply and demand. When there is plenty of sun and wind, electricity prices often drop, while prices tend to rise when it’s cold and there’s no wind. View the current dynamic purchase prices.
Difference between a fixed and a dynamic energy contract
With a fixed contract, your energy rates are usually locked in for 1 or 3 years. With a dynamic contract, rates change continuously. This can be advantageous if you can smartly adjust your energy usage to coincide with cheaper times. You always pay taxes and grid operator costs, regardless of the type of contract.
Is a flexible contract right for you?
Benefits of a dynamic energy contract:
- Low rates and sometimes even free electricity when there’s plenty of sun and wind
- Actively save by shifting your electricity usage and planning smartly
- Ideal in combination with smart devices, such as a charging station or home battery
- Often extra cost-effective during the summer months
- Can be canceled daily
Disadvantages of a dynamic energy contract:
- Using energy during peak times can be expensive
- No certainty about your monthly costs due to fluctuating rates
- Negative feed-in tariff possible with solar panels
- Actively checking the app and planning your usage
Our advice: A dynamic energy contract is a good fit for you if you can decide when to use energy. Think about using appliances like a washing machine, charging station, or home battery wisely. By using them during off-peak hours, you can save a lot.
If you can’t actively manage your energy consumption or don’t like uncertainty, then a fixed-rate energy contract is a better fit for you.

Compare dynamic energy suppliers
We’ve compared the plans of several dynamic energy suppliers. We’ve noticed clear differences in fixed costs, how they handle solar panels, and the quality of their apps.
Cheapest dynamic suppliers
NextEnergy, Frank Energie, and Budget Energie’s dynamic contracts are among the most affordable options. This is due to their low fixed costs and the cashbacks they offer. As a result, they are often the cheapest dynamic suppliers overall.
For solar panel owners
The Zonneplan dynamic contract is the best option for households with solar panels, thanks to their unique solar bonus on top of the market price. Frank Energie is also an attractive option, due to the combination of a feed-in bonus and high cashback.
Large, well-known dynamic suppliers
For a dynamic contract, you can also turn to well-known names like Eneco, Essent, and Vattenfall. Of these three, the Vattenfall dynamic contract scores the best: reasonable rates, the app is well-reviewed, and with solar panels, they are a safe choice.
The least cost-effective choice
The ANWB Energie dynamic contract stood out as the most expensive, mainly due to the high markup for electricity. Additionally, their app receives a lot of criticism from users.
Dynamic energy contract with solar panels
With a dynamic energy contract, you receive the market price for the electricity you feed back into the grid: a rate that changes every hour (or every 15 minutes). On average, this price is around €0.04 per kWh. You don’t pay any fixed feed-in costs, but suppliers do have different rules.
For example, some suppliers deduct an export fee from the market price (a disguised form of feed-in costs), while other suppliers offer a bonus on top of the market price. In this article, you’ll learn how dynamic suppliers handle feed-in for solar panels.
A dynamic energy contract with solar panels may be less cost-effective, as the market price is often low or even negative. Furthermore, net metering works differently: you cannot offset the electricity you generate in the summer against your winter usage, as you can with a fixed-rate contract.
Is a dynamic energy contract worth it?
Whether a dynamic energy contract is a good choice for you depends on two things: when electricity and gas are cheap or expensive, and whether you can adjust your usage accordingly. Prices are mainly determined by the season and grid demand.
When is dynamic electricity cheap?
- During off-peak hours: at night, in the afternoon, and on weekends, there is less demand for electricity, which often means lower prices.
- In the spring and summer: plenty of wind and sunshine drive down the spot price (sometimes even to negative levels).
When is dynamic electricity expensive?
- During peak hours: when we all use a lot of electricity at the same time (between 7:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–8:00 PM), the price goes up.
- When there is little wind or sun: gas-fired power plants have to step in, which is more expensive.
When is dynamic gas cheap?
- In the spring and summer: lower demand for heating and ample supplies drive the price down.
When is dynamic gas expensive?
- In the fall and winter: higher demand for heating and lower stock levels push the price up.
If you can effectively shift your usage to the cheaper times, a dynamic energy contract can be worthwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dynamic Energy
How do you compare dynamic energy contracts?
With a fixed-rate contract, you compare energy suppliers based on fixed rates. With a dynamic energy contract, it works differently: the rates change regularly, but the purchase rate is the same for all suppliers.
What you can compare, however, are the supplier costs, namely: the markup and subscription costs.
In our dynamic comparison tool, you can easily find the monthly amounts, fixed supplier fees, and any cashbacks. The cheapest contract on an annual basis is always listed at the top.
Which is the best dynamic energy supplier?
In 2025, Keuze.nl conducted its annual survey to identify the best dynamic energy supplier. The following suppliers emerged as the top choices:
Customer satisfaction category:
- Zonneplan
- Tibber
- Frank Energie
Lowest Price Category:
- NextEnergy
- Budget Energy
- Frank Energy
Solar panels category:
- Frank Energy
- Noord Energy
- Budget Energy
Just like last year, Zonneplan won the customer satisfaction category and thus retained first place. Our price survey this year identified NextEnergy as the consistently cheapest supplier of dynamic energy. For households with solar panels, Frank Energie proved to be the most affordable choice.
What are the costs of a dynamic energy contract?
Dynamic energy prices are composed of:
- Purchase price: The base market price is determined on the exchange and varies daily (gas) or hourly (electricity). This price is the same for all suppliers.
- Markup: Varies by supplier. This is a surcharge per kWh or m³ added to your consumption (purchase price).
- Subscription fees: Monthly fixed costs for using the energy service, comparable to the standing charge in fixed-term contracts. This amount also varies by supplier.
- Grid operator costs and energy tax – These are set annually by the government and are the same for every supplier.
Which dynamic energy suppliers are (un)reliable?
On our website, you’ll find only dynamic energy suppliers that also hold their own license from the energy authority ACM. This way, we can be sure that these are reliable and financially sound energy suppliers.
When is a dynamic energy contract a good deal?
A dynamic energy contract is particularly beneficial if you’re flexible with your energy usage. By using appliances such as a washing machine, smart water heater, or electric car during times when electricity prices are low, you can save a significant amount. Many suppliers offer apps that let you see exactly when electricity is cheapest or even free.
When is a dynamic energy contract more expensive?
When energy demand is high and supply is low—such as during the winter months—rates may rise. If you prefer to have certainty about your energy rates, a fixed-rate energy contract is a better choice for you.
