Fact: 97% of the Ziggo network consists of fiber-optic cables.
The Ziggo network uses fiber-optic cable all the way to the street cabinet, after which it switches to cable.
The fiber-optic cable network is therefore 97% fiber-optic. Only the final section from the street cabinet to the home is not fiber-optic but a coaxial cable. This allows Ziggo to provide internet speeds of up to 2 Gbit/s to virtually every household—which is just as fast as what you can get with fiber-optic subscriptions.
Myth: Ziggo advertises a fully fiber-optic network
Ziggo does not advertise a fully fiber-optic network. They advertise their network as a “fiber-optic cable network.”
In the past, Ziggo has been reprimanded by the Advertising Code Committee and KPN for using the term “fiber-optic cable network” in its advertising. KPN also filed another lawsuit against Ziggo in 2026 over the use of this term. Ziggo won the case and is permitted to continue using the term.
Partly a myth: Internet speeds are slower than with a fiber-optic subscription
The download speed is just as fast as with other fiber-optic plans. However, the upload speed with Ziggo is lower than with fiber-optic providers.
With Ziggo, you can achieve the same download speeds as with a fiber-optic subscription. These speeds go up to 2 Gbit/s.
With Ziggo, the upload speed is only 10% of the download speed. With a fiber-optic subscription, the upload speed is equal to the download speed and therefore much faster.
Ziggo or fiber optic—which should I choose?
The biggest difference between Ziggo and fiber is the upload speed. With Ziggo, the upload speed is lower than the download speed. With fiber, they’re just as fast. A fast upload speed is useful if you often send large files, for example, if you work from home.

Ziggo does not offer fiber-optic service because it uses its own fiber-optic cable network. Ziggo calls the combination of fiber-optic and coaxial cables a “smart combination” because coaxial cables are already in place at many locations. This means there’s no need to dig up streets to install an internet connection.
When will Ziggo switch to fiber optics?
Although the Ziggo network is partially fiber-optic (extending to the meter box in an increasing number of homes), Ziggo will not fully transition to fiber-optic internet.
However, in 2026, in collaboration with Delta Fiber, they will begin providing fiber-optic service in a number of municipalities in the Netherlands where Ziggo cable internet is not available. This will give 600,000 households access to fiber-optic service through Ziggo.
