When should you sign up for a standalone gas contract?

A standalone gas contract can be a smart (and necessary) choice for various reasons.

You want flexibility

Sometimes it’s cheaper to sign up for gas separately rather than together with electricity. You may also have different preferences for both your gas and electricity contracts, and you can’t find that with a single supplier.

Make a strategic choice

Do you want to manage your electricity usage smartly, but avoid the downsides of a dynamic gas price? Then combining a dynamic electricity contract with a separate gas contract could be a strategic choice.

You live in a vacation home

Do you live in a vacation park where the park provides electricity but not gas? In that case, you’ll need to sign a separate gas contract yourself.

Step 3

Request the contract

Next, sign up with the new supplier. Do you already have a terminable energy contract? If so, your new supplier will cancel it for you on the agreed-upon start date.

Pros and cons of using only gas

A standalone gas contract has both advantages and disadvantages. Here are the main ones:

Advantages:

  • Flexibility to choose the best electricity and gas providers
  • Combine the highest sign-up bonuses for your electricity and gas contracts
  • Extra savings with a dynamic electricity contract

Disadvantages:

  • Combined electricity and gas contracts are often cheaper
  • Separate bills for gas and electricity
  • Multiple apps required for management
  • Customer service from two different providers

So decide for yourself whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Are costs the most important factor for you? Then use the energy comparison tool to see which is cheaper: gas only or a combined plan.

Should I choose gas with a fixed or variable rate?

In addition to a standard gas contract with fixed rates, you can also choose a dynamic gas-only contract in our comparison tool. Which is the better choice?

Dynamic gas is risky
With a dynamic gas contract, the price changes daily. That can sometimes work out in your favor, but often it doesn’t. Especially during peak times of the day and in the winter—when you use more heating and take more showers—there’s a good chance you’ll end up paying more than with a fixed contract.

A dynamic gas contract is only suitable for people who are willing to take risks.

A fixed gas price is predictable
With a fixed contract, you know exactly where you stand. No worries about price fluctuations or unexpected spikes. Plus, more suppliers offer a higher cashback with a one-year contract than with a dynamic gas contract.

Do you value certainty? Then a fixed-rate gas-only contract is the safest and smartest choice.

Is a gas-only plan cheaper than a combined plan?

In most cases, a gas-only plan isn’t cheaper than a combined plan. But there are certainly exceptions, such as with a hybrid energy plan.

Is a combined plan an option for you? If so, always compare both options: combined and separate. You can easily do this in our energy comparison tool by adjusting the filters.

Hybrid energy contract cheaper with separate gas + dynamic electricity

Does the idea of a daily-changing electricity price appeal to you, allowing you to manage your electricity usage smartly? But do you want control over your gas costs with a fixed price? Our price check shows that in this situation, a separate gas + dynamic electricity contract is cheaper than a 2-in-1 hybrid contract offered by some suppliers.
