Want to get the most out of your unlimited data plan?

Want to watch videos on the go without any issues? Then you’ll need a speed of at least 50 Mbit/s. Keep this in mind when choosing your provider.

For example, Budget Mobiel’s cheapest unlimited plan only offers 25 Mbit/s. That’s not enough to stream even a single series on Netflix.

When should you choose a SIM-only plan with unlimited data?

If you use more than 20GB per month, a SIM-only plan with unlimited data is a smart choice. Do you use less data? Then you’ll save money with a large data plan. For example, you can get a 40GB data bundle starting at €13 per month. This saves you €84 per year. You can compare all SIM-only plans here.

With unlimited data from Budget Mobiel, Odido, and Vodafone, you also get unlimited calling. With KPN, you pay an extra €1 per month for unlimited calling.

How much does a SIM-only plan with unlimited data cost?

A SIM-only plan with unlimited data costs between €20 and €32.50 per month, depending on the provider. Budget Mobiel offers the cheapest SIM-only plan with unlimited data, while Vodafone offers the most expensive.

Here’s what you’ll pay per plan:

  • Budget Mobiel: €20 per month
  • Odido: €24.95 per month
  • KPN: €29 per month
  • Vodafone: €32.50 per month

What is the internet speed for an unlimited SIM-only plan?

SIM-only providers offer these internet speeds with unlimited data

ProviderInternet Speed
Odido20–1,000 Mbit/s
Budget Mobile25 Mbit/s
Vodafone1000 Mbit/s
KPN50–600 Mbit/s

Please note: With Odido and KPN, you pay extra for a speed upgrade.

Odido and Vodafone offer unlimited internet at speeds of up to 1 GBit/s. With Odido, you’ll pay an extra €10.05 per month for this. In practice, you’ll never really need this speed. So try to find a good balance between what you need and the (additional) cost of the subscription.

What internet speed do you need?

How fast does the internet speed on your SIM-only unlimited plan need to be to ensure a pleasant experience without annoying buffering? Here are some rules of thumb to follow:

Internet SpeedWhen?
50–150 Mbit/s
  • For light internet use
  • Sending messages, checking the news
150–350 Mbit/s
  • Heavy social media use
  • Streaming videos in low quality
350+ Mbit/s
  • Streaming videos in high quality
  • Playing online games

We recommend choosing a plan with at least 150+ Mbit/s. With this speed, you can easily do a lot online and watch higher-quality videos.

SIM-only providers with unlimited data

There are 4 providers that offer SIM-only plans with unlimited data:

  • Budget Mobiel
  • KPN
  • Odido
  • Vodafone

So what’s the difference between these four providers, aside from price? Internet speed is a key difference between the plans offered by these providers. For example, the cheapest plans from Budget Mobiel and Odido offer much slower speeds than the more expensive plan from Vodafone.

Is a SIM-only plan with unlimited data really unlimited?

Yes, technically speaking, within the Netherlands. You can browse the internet endlessly in a single day before you even come close to hitting a data cap. To give you an idea: with 1 GB of data, you can stream music for 2 hours or watch 1 hour of high-quality videos.

Daily Limit

Almost all providers have a daily limit of 20 GB. Only Budget Mobiel has a daily limit of 4 GB. If you exceed the daily limit, you can increase it by 2 GB for free. So you do have unlimited internet, but you might occasionally need to take an extra step if you use an extremely large amount of data in a single day.

SIM-only providers operate under what’s known as a Fair Use Policy, or “FUP.” The providers’ FUP specifies how many GB a provider considers reasonable per day. Providers use this to prevent the network from becoming overloaded.

What is the cheapest SIM-only plan with unlimited data?

The cheapest SIM-only plan with unlimited data is from Budget Mobiel. This plan costs €20 per month.

But keep in mind, this plan has a low internet speed of only 25 Mbit/s. Looking for faster internet? Then Odido offers the cheapest plan with 400 Mbit/s for €32.50 per month.

SIM-only plan with unlimited data while abroad

With an unlimited SIM-only plan, you can use your data allowance abroad as usual, but there is a monthly limit. Within the EU, providers have scaled back their unlimited data plans to a limited number of GB.

* Odido offers various types of plans that affect your international data allowance

SIM-only with unlimited data in the EU
Within the EU, you can use the data allowances mentioned above if you have a SIM-only plan with unlimited data. Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the EU, but with all providers, you can still use your EU data allowance in the United Kingdom. Turkey is also an exception. It falls outside the EU zone, except with Vodafone.

SIM-only with unlimited data outside the EU
You cannot use your data plan with any provider outside the EU zone. With Vodafone, however, you can use your unlimited data plan in the U.S. In all other cases, you’ll pay international rates, which vary by provider and by country. Providers do offer international data plans, though, so you can use the internet at a relatively lower price.
