When should you compare internet and TV plans?

Internet and TV subscriptions are at their most affordable 1 to 2 years after you sign up. After that, the welcome discount expires and you’ll pay the standard rate. If you compare plans and switch providers after your contract ends, you can easily save €200 to €350 per year compared to staying with the same provider for years. 

Comparing rates is especially worthwhile at these times:

• At the end of your promotional period: the monthly price will then jump sharply all at once (up to 50% per month)
• When moving: if you’re out of contract, you can immediately take advantage of better offers at your new address (such as fiber-optic internet)
• After a price increase: if a provider unilaterally raises rates by more than the inflation rate, you can cancel your contract for free, even in the middle of your term.

Also, only new customers receive an internet welcome gift, such as a free smart TV or PS5.

What's Included in Your TV Package

A basic TV package always includes the same core set of TV channels: NPO 1, 2, and 3; all national commercial channels (RTL, SBS6, Net5, Veronica); the Belgian public broadcasters (één, Canvas, Ketnet), the major British and German public broadcasters (BBC One, BBC Two, ARD, ZDF), plus international channels such as National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and Eurosport. With any major provider, this amounts to about 60 to 75 channels, most of which are in HD.

A bigger difference lies in the digital features included with the TV package: every basic package includes 7 days of catch-up and the ability to pause live TV. Beyond that, you pay for cloud recording: 

KPN Recording Package (€5 per month): 

• 300 hours of recording space
• Record up to 6 programs at once
• 12-month retention period
• With the Recording Package Extra (€1 extra), you get 1,000 hours 

Ziggo TV Complete / Max: 

• Recording is included for 400 hours (you cannot record with TV Start)
• 12-month storage period

Odido: Cloud recording is included as standard with every TV subscription; no separate package is needed. 

A theme package (movies, sports, international) is available separately for €10 to €15 per month. Do you mainly watch live TV and the included channels? Then the basic package is enough. Do you binge-watch entire series or watch TV very irregularly? Then it might be worth having cloud recording included in your package.

Which provider has the best TV app?

All major providers (KPN, Ziggo, Odido, Delta, Youfone, hollandsnieuwe, and Solcon) offer their own free TV app for watching live TV on your phone, tablet, or smart TV. Hollandsnieuwe stands out from the rest: it delivers TV exclusively through the app (no more media box or set-top box).

Online.nl and Freedom Internet do not use their own apps but rely on the apps from CANAL+ and Canal Digitaal. These apps are not exclusive to the internet provider but are also used by individual subscribers of CANAL+ and Canal Digitaal. The advantage: more developer attention and a larger user base than a provider’s proprietary app. The downside: less seamless integration with your internet subscription.

But which app—proprietary or shared—is actually the best? It’s good to know that TV apps are utility apps. People who like them rarely write a review; those who encounter an update bug, for example, are more likely to do so. So don’t let a TV app’s rating guide you too much. Most viewers at home hardly notice the difference.

Additional TV receiver

Do you want to watch TV from multiple rooms in your home using a single TV? Then you have two options: rent an additional TV receiver from your provider, or use the TV app on a smart TV, media player, or tablet in that room. With hollandsnieuwe, you can only watch TV through the app: there are no set-top boxes available for order.

An additional set-top box costs €2.50 per month at Odido—the cheapest option—and €6 per month at KPN and Ziggo—the most expensive. You can adjust the number of set-top boxes each month.

With the TV app, you can watch in a second room at no extra cost with KPN, Ziggo, and Odido on up to 3 screens at the same time. With Youfone, you can watch on up to 2 screens at the same time. For households with a modern smart TV (manufactured around 2018 or later), an extra set-top box is usually unnecessary if you have the TV app. This saves you about €30 to €72 per year.
